About Into the Fire
71: Into the Fire (also known as Into the Gunfire) is a 2010 South Korean war film directed by Lee Jae-han (English name John H. Lee). It was released in South Korean theaters on June 16, 2010. Based on a true story of 71 soldier trainees against seasoned North Korean fighters during the Korean War.
A civil war broke out in the 1950s between North and South Korea which changed the country forever. 71: Into the Fire centres on the struggles of 71 student soldiers that fought through the Korean War. Using real people and events, the film exposes the personal and physical conflicts that these students faced when finding themselves on the last line of defence in Pohang girls¡¯ middle school, needing to hold out until back up from other Korean troops and the Allies arrived.
1. Early working title for the film was "71".
2. Yu Seung-Ho & Kim Beom were originally cast in the lead roles, but with Taewon Entertainment taking over production a decision was made to cast Kwon Sang Woo & T.O.P (Choi Seung Hyn) instead.
3. "Into the Gunfire" is based on the real story of 71 students who fought hundreds of North Korean soldiers in front of Pohang girls¡¯ middle school during the Korean War. The area was critical point for safeguarding the Nakdong River frontier. A letter was found from one of the 71 deceased soldiers which inspired the movie.
4. Estimated budget is 12 billion Won (10.4 million USD).
5. Filming began December 1st, 2009 and finished April 13, 2010. The last scene filmed took place in a field of reeds on Hwang Mae mountain in Hopcheon, Gyeongnam, South Korea.
