If you plan to visit any of the islands off Korea's south coast this spring, please take along this pocket-size book as your companion. In April two years ago, I went to the southern island Bogildo. A car ferry can get you there from Haenam, South Cholla Province, within a couple of hours. The weather was mild and balmy as spring had already arrived to paint its trees vivid green, and pebbles on the beach made funny sounds as if murmuring to the lapping waves. The reason the book makes a good companion is because Yoon Sun-do, the great Confucian scholar (1587-1671), wrote the poems in it while staying on the very island. Every Korean learns about him during high school. If you mention him and his poems to Koreans, they are sure to be impressed with your knowledge of Korean literature. If you meet anybody who isn't, please pass their names on to me.
