Not all that long ago (by Korean standards) you could see from Namdaemun to Dongdaemun. The view was of course in black and white, as are the hundreds of other photographs from modern Seoul's history included in Seoul Through Pictures 1: The Modernization of Seoul and its Trials (1876-1910) and Seoul Through Pictures 2: Seoul Under Japanese Agression (1910-1945). Every other page leaves you shocked at how different things are now, and, depending on the period, how Japanese-looking some neighborhoods used to be. A must for anyone serious about Korea-related materials, and the English is even more than readable.
