The story resolves around a pair of priceless and extremely powerful weapons, known respectively as the Heavenly Sword) and Dragon-Slaying Sabre which all of wulin's martial artists covet. Either or both of them are thought to allow their wielder to rule the martial arts world, according to a widely circulating rumour in an oft-repeated mantra, though for some reason they are now lost. The novel¡¯s main protagonist, Zhang Wuji, was born on an isolated island known as Ice Fire Island. In the early years of his life, he had never met another human being besides his parents (Zhang Cuishan and Yin Susu) and godfather (Xie Xun). He learnt some basic martial arts and survival skills from them during his ten-year long stay on the island until the time was ripe for them to make their long journey by sea back to the Central Plains. His godfather, however, decided to remain on the island in solitude, with only the Dragon-Slaying Sabre he acquired ten years ago to keep him company.
